Adult ADHD Assessment
Adult ADHD assessment comprehensively evaluates cognitive functions, such as memory, attention, language, and executive functioning. It provides valuable insights into how the brain functions and helps identify strengths and weaknesses in various cognitive domains. By conducting specialised tests and assessments, psychologists can diagnose neurological conditions, such as ADHD, and develop tailored treatment plans to address cognitive difficulties and improve overall functioning.

ADHD TESTING AND IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS
Following the initial consultation, the next step involves an ADHD assessment and treatment that includes completion of various online questionnaires. The specific number and type of assessments will be tailored to address your individual concerns and needs, guided by the insights gained from the initial consultation.
Your psychologist will then take an in-depth analysis and spend many hours reviewing your assessments and sessions. They’ll formulate a written report, offer recommendations, and organise a feedback session with you.
FEEDBACK SESSION
Feedback session is typically arranged following the completion of your assessments, depending on availability. This session will last up to 50-60 minutes, during which your psychologist will provide you with both a written report and a verbal explanation of the assessment findings, and provide effective coping strategies to manage your symptoms.
We create an environment conducive to open dialogue is essential for fostering trust and understanding between the clinician and client. By providing an opportunity for the client to ask questions, it transforms the interaction from a mere delivery of feedback into a collaborative exchange.

Frequently Asked Questions
I was just diagnosed with ADHD in my 40s. Where do I even start with treatment?
First, take a breath. A late diagnosis can bring a flood of emotions—relief, grief, anger, and validation—all at once. You might be thinking, "What if I'd known sooner?" or "Is it too late to change?"
It is not too late. Many adults are diagnosed later in life, often after years of struggling with anxiety, depression, or burnout. Here's where we start:
- Process the emotions: We create space for you to grieve the past and reframe your story with self-compassion.
- Understand your brain: We help you understand how ADHD has shown up in your life—your career, relationships, and self-esteem.
- Build practical strategies: We focus on your current life stage, not catch-up. What works for a 40-year-old parent or professional looks different than strategies for a child or teen.
You're not starting late. You're starting with clarity.
I struggle with massive procrastination and feel paralyzed by tasks. Can therapy actually help with this?
Absolutely. Procrastination in ADHD is rarely about laziness—it's about emotional regulation and executive dysfunction. You might feel:
- Overwhelmed by where to start.
- Fear of failure (or fear of success).
- "Task paralysis" where your brain freezes.
- Stuck in "waiting mode" (unable to start something until a specific time).
We use proven strategies including:
- Task breakdown: Chunking overwhelming tasks into micro-steps (sometimes as small as "open the laptop").
- Body doubling: Working alongside someone (virtually or in-person) to stay on track.
- Time-blocking: Structuring your day visually to reduce decision fatigue.
- Addressing perfectionism: Unlearning the "all or nothing" mindset.
We don't just tell you to "try harder"—we build systems that work with your brain, not against it.
I'm struggling to keep up at work. Can you help me with ADHD-related career challenges?
Yes. Adult ADHD can significantly impact your professional life. Common challenges we address include:
- Difficulty prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines.
- Procrastination on complex or boring projects.
- Impulsive comments in meetings or email responses.
- Feeling overwhelmed by open-plan offices or constant interruptions.
- Burnout from masking and over-compensating.
How we help:
- Time management systems that actually work for your brain (not just another calendar).
- Strategies for managing email and communication overload.
- Guidance on whether and how to disclose ADHD to your employer.
- Support in requesting reasonable accommodations (flexible hours, written instructions, quiet workspace).
- Career coaching to find roles that play to ADHD strengths (creativity, hyperfocus, problem-solving).
We can also provide formal reports to support workplace accommodations if needed.
My partner doesn't understand my ADHD. It's causing constant arguments. Can you help us?
Yes, and this is one of the most common reasons adults seek support. ADHD doesn't just affect you—it affects your partner too. Common patterns include:
- The non-ADHD partner feeling like a "parent" or constantly reminding.
- Misinterpreting forgetfulness as not caring.
- Emotional intensity leading to frequent arguments.
- Difficulty with household chores and sharing the "mental load."
How we help:
- Helping both partners understand how ADHD shows up in the dynamic (it's not intentional, but it's still impactful).
- Communication strategies to reduce conflict and blame.
- Practical systems for sharing responsibilities (chores, finances, planning).
- Individual support for the partner with ADHD, or joint sessions if both are willing.
We also address Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) , which can make perceived criticism feel devastating in relationships.
I've heard about Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) linked to ADHD. What is it, and can you treat it?
Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is an intense emotional reaction to perceived criticism, rejection, or failure—it's extremely common in ADHD. It can feel like a sudden wave of overwhelming pain, shame, or anger, often out of proportion to the situation. You might:
- Avoid trying new things for fear of failure.
- Shut down or lash out if you feel criticized.
- People-please excessively to avoid disapproval.
- Feel devastated by minor feedback.
How we help:
- Psychoeducation: Understanding that RSD is a neurological response, not a character flaw.
- Cognitive reframing: Gently challenging the story your brain tells you about rejection.
- Self-soothing techniques: Building a toolkit to regulate emotions in the moment.
- Building resilience: Strengthening self-esteem separate from external validation.
You don't have to live at the mercy of these intense feelings.
I'm a parent with ADHD, and I'm exhausted. How do I manage my kids and my own brain at the same time?
Parenting with ADHD is uniquely exhausting. You're trying to manage your own executive dysfunction while being responsible for little humans who need constant regulation. The guilt can be overwhelming.
We help parent with ADHD by focusing on:
- Letting go of "perfect parenting": You don't need Instagram-worthy routines. You need systems that are "good enough" and sustainable.
- Reducing overwhelm: Simple, visual routines for mornings, homework, and bedtime that work for both you and your kids.
- Managing emotional regulation: So you can respond to your child's meltdowns without having your own.
- Partnership strategies: If you have a co-parent, we help divide tasks in a way that plays to everyone's strengths.
- Self-compassion: Because the guilt is heavy, and it doesn't help you or your kids.
You're not a bad parent because parenting is hard with ADHD. You're a parent who needs different tools.
Do I need medication for adult ADHD, or can I manage it with therapy alone?
This is a personal decision, and there is no single "right" answer. Here's how we approach it:
Therapy and coaching alone can be highly effective for many adults. We focus on building skills, systems, and self-understanding that create lasting change. Many clients find they don't need or want medication.
Medication can be helpful for some, particularly if:
- Symptoms are severe and impacting daily functioning.
- You've tried therapy/coaching and still feel stuck.
- You want temporary relief while building skills (medication + therapy often works best together).
Our role:
- We do not prescribe medication (we're a psychology clinic).
- We can help you understand whether medication might be worth exploring.
- If you choose that path, we provide a comprehensive report to support a psychiatrist consultation.
- We then work alongside medication (if you choose it) to build the skills medication makes possible.
We respect your choice either way.
How long does adult ADHD treatment take? When will I feel better?
This is a very honest question. Here's what to expect:
Early relief (first few sessions): Many clients feel immediate relief from simply:
- Understanding their brain better.
- Realising they're not "broken" or "lazy."
- Having one or two practical strategies that actually work.
Skill-building phase (3–6 months): This is where deeper change happens. You'll be:
- Implementing systems for work and home.
- Noticing improved emotional regulation.
- Feeling more confident in relationships.
- Seeing progress in areas where you previously felt stuck.
Long-term maintenance (ongoing): ADHD is a chronic condition, so "cured" isn't the goal. The goal is that you have the tools, self-awareness, and support to navigate life's challenges without being derailed by them. Some clients check in monthly or as-needed; others "graduate" and return if life gets complicated again.
Progress isn't linear, and we'll be there for every step.
I have ADHD but also struggle with anxiety and depression. Can you treat all of them together?
Absolutely. In fact, we must treat them together. Anxiety and depression are not separate from your ADHD—they are often caused by or intertwined with it.
Common patterns:
- Years of undiagnosed ADHD lead to anxiety about "failing" or "forgetting."
- Rejection sensitivity triggers social anxiety.
- Burnout from masking leads to depression.
- ADHD-related impulsivity creates stressful life situations that cause low mood.
How we help:
- We don't treat ADHD in isolation. We look at the whole picture.
- CBT helps address anxious thoughts and negative self-beliefs.
- Mindfulness and grounding techniques calm the nervous system.
- Practical coaching reduces the life chaos that fuels anxiety and depression.
- We build self-compassion for the years you struggled without understanding why.
You don't need separate therapists for each condition. We've got you.
Can you help with ADHD-related financial struggles? I struggle with impulse spending and bills.
Yes—this is a huge and often unspoken struggle for adults with ADHD. Financial challenges can include:
- Impulse spending (the dopamine hit).
- Forgetting to pay bills (leading to late fees).
- Avoiding bank accounts out of shame.
- Difficulty planning for the future (superannuation, savings).
- Impulsive career or business decisions.
How we help:
- We're not financial advisors, but we help with the ADHD side of money.
- Understanding the emotional drivers of spending.
- Building simple, automated systems so you don't have to rely on willpower.
- Reducing shame so you can actually look at your finances.
- Working with partners to share the "mental load" of money management.
Money struggles with ADHD are not a moral failing. They're a brain difference—and there are strategies that help.
