Functional Testing

“All disease begins in the gut.” – Hypocrates

What is Functional Testing?

Functional testing looks at a wide range of pathogenic, nutritional, and biochemical markers relating to different systems within our body – many of which affect our mental health. Essentially, adopting such an approach cuts out the guesswork!

Our tests range from blood, stool, saliva, and urine samples – many of which may be collected in the comfort of your own home. These tests are carefully selected in order to provide you with specific information relating to your current state of health.

Functional testing often differs from conventional pathology tests as it gives insight into the current ‘function’ of your body.

We support you by offering the following functional testing:

Our Process:
Your path to better health

How Functional Testing Can Help You

Functional testing allows you to discover underlying imbalances that give detailed insight into your current state of health.

It will shed light on any areas of dysfunction that may be contributing to your symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, fatigue, brain fog), and provide more in-depth guidance for your practitioner in order to tailor the most beneficial treatment plan towards better health.

Functional testing is an invaluable service that illuminates physiological factors affecting your physical and mental health. It is a stand alone service or can be used to inform treatment plans alongside our Psychology and Nutrition services.

Some Of Our Most Popular Tests In More Detail...

Neurotransmitters & metabolites (urine test)

$279.00 - $429.00 +P&H

Assess the levels of your ‘feel good’ chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) to find out if they are affecting your mental health.

For example, if your dopamine is low you may feel depressed, anxious, unmotivated, or have addictive tendencies. Low serotonin may cause anxiety, OCD, depression, or sleep difficulty. This chemical messenger can also affect changes in appetite, and digestion. A large percentage of our neurotransmitters are actually made in our gut!

GI360 (stool tests over 3 days)

$535.00 + $22.00 P&H

Is your gut health affecting your production of ‘feel good’ chemical messengers (known as neurotransmitters)?
There are several aspects of gut health that could be affecting how you feel.

Assess the following:
Microbiome abundance & diversity – Gut bacteria are involved in both the production and messaging of neurotransmitters, so we need them to be in balance for optimal mental health!

Digestive function – If your digestive function is impaired, you may not be absorbing essential nutrients required to make energy and neurotransmitters OR you may have an increased demand for certain nutrients. Our gut is actually involved in making some nutrients too!

Gut inflammation –These markers can help to identify current states of inflammation in the gut which may contribute to mental health imbalances. These markers may also help to differentiate between IBD and IBS in some cases, or warrant further specialist investigation.

Viruses, pathogens, and parasites – These may rob essential nutrients or negatively affect your digestion and absorption, which may negatively impact your mental health.

Sex hormone & Stress hormone testing (dried urine & saliva test)

$299.00 - $499.00 +P&H

Did you know that your hormones can affect how you feel?
Hormones play an integral role in how we feel mentally, emotionally, and physically.

For example, low testosterone may contribute to fatigue or low mood. Estrogen may influence serotonin levels, and therefore influence your mood or sleep quality. People who experience anxiety, mood swings, or severe PMS may also have varying hormonal imbalances. High stress hormones may exacerbate or cause anxiety.

Organic Acid Testing (OAT) (urine)

$359.00 +P&H

An organic acid test is a great test for giving an overall snapshot of the body’s function in order to shed light on areas of concern and where to put particular focus when compiling treatment strategies.

This test assesses general gut health, energy production, neurotransmitters (feel good chemical messengers), detoxification, use of fats, and some of the key nutrients important for mental health.

Comprehensive thyroid test (blood)

$179.00 +P&H

Find out if your thyroid hormones are affecting your mood or energy status. Thyroid hormones control our metabolism (essentially where food you eat is transformed into energy). Energy is used throughout the entire body to maintain optimal function of the different systems.

Imbalanced thyroid hormones can lead to undesirable states of mental health such as anxiety or depression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, functional testing uses modern scientific methods to investigate the processes of your body and assist in discovering underlaying health imbalances.

Most of our functional tests can be performed in the comfort of your own home, however there are some specific tests such as blood draw tests that will require you to go to a pathology lab (e.g. QML).

All test kits have clear instructions on what is required and your healthcare practitioner will ensure that you’re familiar with this information prior to test collection.

There are many different types of functional testing. These include but are not limited to:
Blood draw
Saliva
Urine
Dried urine
Stool samples
Finger prick
Breath test

Most tests take up to 4 weeks to be processed.

Check contact us for a more solid timeframe on the specific test that you’re interested in.

The purpose of a discovery call is to establish a brief outline of your needs, determine how we can support you in reaching your health goals, and to give you the opportunity to see if we’re a good fit for you.

Once your results are back, you will make a follow-up appointment (if you haven’t already) with our Nutritionist who is also a functional testing specialist, who will go over your results with you, along with a treatment plan to suit your individual needs.

Functional testing is beyond the scope of Medicare cover.
It is therefore an out of pocket expense.

No, however the cost of your consultation may be covered if you have private health cover with an eligible insurer.

Check your level of cover to claim a portion of the consultation fee.
